Projects

I've learned a lot along the way as I've set up my market gardening business on an island often buffeted by gale force winds and salt spray. Here I'd like to share with you what I have done to prepare the ground and protect my crops. I hope that this will inspire you wherever you are gardening.

Site Preparation

We started with a paddock that had housed livestock for centuries. The good news was that it was already sheltered by a mature fuchsia hedge and dry-stone wall. But the site needed to be planned and the ground prepared for becoming a garden.

Polytunnel Construction

As the site was being prepared, polytunnels were also being constructed.

Tree Plantation

Stronsay is severely lacking in trees. I wanted to add to the limited stock on the island, create a habitat for wildlife and do my bit to combat climate destruction. So, I planted trees. Hundreds of them!

Additional Crop Protection

Somethings grow better outside or take up too much room in the polytunnels. But they need some help to get started and protection from the devastating power of the wind and the burning salt air. So, I have fashioned a number of ways of protecting fragile crops.
